Stop Counting Calories

Stop Counting CaloriesI can’t stand the word “calorie.” When the world found out that 3500 calories is equal to about 1 pound of human fat, everything became so simple. Just create a caloric deficit of 3500 calories per week and you’ll lose a pound every week. Easy, right? Unfortunately, it’s wrong.

Although it’s true that 3500 calories is equivalent to about one pound of fat, there are so many other variables that affect your metabolism (like your liver) that the idea is virtually meaningless. Which do you think will cause you to gain more fat, eating 3500 calories worth of candy or eating 3500 calories worth of vegetables?

It’s not how many calories you eat, it’s what kind of calories you eat. If you’re counting calories, you’re wasting your time and possibly doing more harm than good, especially if the calories are from processed ingredients and bad carbs.

All you have to do is stop eating processed food or anything with more than a few ingredients and instead eat naturally occurring foods like meat, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds (and maybe a little dairy). Do that and you can put away your calculator and stop counting calories.

Does that mean you can eat as much as you want, as long as it’s healthy? Sadly, no. It is technically possible to get fat on the healthy foods I mentioned, but you’d really have to pig out. Instead, all you have to do is eat slowly and stop eating when you’re full. The fat and protein in your meal will usually be enough to keep you full until your next meal.

It’s a shame how many people starve themselves for no reason. The ironic thing is that when you starve yourself, your metabolism slows down and you burn even fewer calories. This is often referred to as “starvation mode,” where your body clings to every bit of fat in order to prevent you from starving to death. It’s yet another reason why counting calories simply doesn’t work.

The Danger of Processed Foods

Processed FoodsOther than sugar, processed foods are the most important type of food to avoid. But what exactly are processed foods? In short, they’re any food that’s been altered from its natural state in order to improve the taste or increase the shelf life. That means most of them are full of sugar and harmful chemicals that make it very difficult for your body to burn fat.

In order to explain why, I’ll need to give you a quick anatomy lesson. The most important organ for losing fat and getting in shape is the liver. That’s because the liver’s two main functions are to break down fat and filter out harmful substances.

If your liver is what breaks down fat, then you want it working at peak efficiency. The problem is that when it’s busy filtering out all the harmful substances found in processed food, it doesn’t have any time or energy left to break down fat. The solution is simple: Stop eating processed foods! If you cut out processed foods, your liver will cleanse itself and break down fat.

Here’s a short list of ingredients to avoid:

  • Artificial sweeteners (like aspartame and sucralose).
  • Hydrogenated oils (found in vegetable oils and peanut butter).
  • Processed soy products (such as soybean oil in dressings).
  • High fructose corn syrup (probably the worst one).

There are many more, but these are the most common. Processed foods overwhelm your liver and make it impossible for it to do its other job. This is also why many people have liver problems when they get older even if they never drank alcohol.

Unfortunately, the ingredients I mentioned above are everywhere, even in “health foods” like yogurt and cereal. It’s hard to avoid them. Here’s a hint, though. Stick to the outside edge of the grocery store and only buy foods with one or two ingredients (except bread). I’m talking about foods like chicken, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and butter. Do that and your liver will be able to break down fat 24 hours a day.

Good Fats vs Bad Fats

Saturated FatsLast week I talked about the difference between good carbs and bad carbs. Unfortunately, there is just as much confusion about good fats and bad fats. Most people are under the impression that saturated fat (found mostly in meats) is bad for them, but the latest research has shown this to be untrue.

For decades Americans have been told by doctors and health gurus to cut down on saturated fat. It was thought that if people ate less saturated fat, their cholesterol would go down and they would have a reduced risk of heart disease. The problem is that when you eat less fat you have to eat more of something else, and most people eat more sugar. Ironically, sugar does more damage to the heart than any other type of food.

In other words, the advice we’ve been hearing all these years has actually caused obesity and heart disease to increase dramatically. Of course, no one wants to take the blame, but doctors and scientists are finally beginning to admit the truth: saturated fat is good for you! When you eat the right kind of fat, your body’s metabolism accelerates dramatically.

Here’s a list of fats you should avoid:

  • Hydrogenated oils
  • Canola oil
  • Vegetable oil
  • Margarine
  • Butter substitutes

Surprised? I don’t blame you. All those ads and TV commercials claim butter substitutes are so much healthier than the real thing. But have you read the ingredients? Soybean oil, gelatin, vegetable diglycerides, lactic acid, artificial flavors, etc. That’s not real food, and it’s hard on your body when you eat it. Your body can’t burn it off, so it stores it as bad fat.

Here’s a list of fats you should eat:

  • Real butter
  • Whole eggs
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Avacados
  • Raw nuts

Surprised again? Don’t worry, you’re not gonna keel over from a heart attack if you eat these.
